Before Silicon Valley became the technology center of the world, the San Jose Flea Market put it on the map. “La Pulga,” as it is known to locals, is America's first and largest flea market. Thousands of immigrants now rely on it for their livelihood. Because of the scarcity of land, “La Pulga” faces imminent closure due to new development. This film chronicles the community’s struggle and the politics involved.

Rene Picazo - Director
Rene is passionate about making documentaries about local social issues in San Jose. In the past, he has worked on community videos to inform the public about neighborhood programs and issues in the Washington, Gardner and Alma communities. "La Pulga" is his most ambitious film to date, and he is excited to have worked on a project that commemorates this San Jose landmark.
Alina Kwak - Producer
Alina Kwak moved from New York City to San Jose almost two years ago when she first discovered the San Jose Flea market. The flea market reminded her of the vibrant West Harlem neighborhood she lived in, and upon hearing its imminent closure, she felt compelled to document its history and the process towards closure. Alina is a Maryland native with a background in communications, social work, and policy.
Henry Servin - Producer
Henry Servin grew up in the Santa Clara Valley, attending local schools and is a graduate of San Jose State University in Civil and Transportation Engineering. His life experience draws upon seeing the rapid changes in the Valley over the past 40 years. He has been active in local transportation efforts including working on the first light rail project and lending support in passage of transit improvement ballots. He served on the original Santa Clara County Transportation Commission in the 1980’s, the precursor to the VTA, as well as the 1996 Transportation Measure A Citizen’s Watchdog Committee. He has also served on City of San Jose planning committees including the Horizon 2020 Task Force. He lives in San Jose with his family and remains an active booster of cultural and community-building events. He currently works on the effort to bring BART transit service to Silicon Valley.
